Celebrations
Festivals:
During Festivals competitions in music mostly playing the Kithara and lyre and also competitions in theatre which involved tragedy and comedy were very popular, Athletic games also. Each festival usually honoured a specific god. People from all over Greece would attend the festivals. Because the festivals are sacred warfare was prohibited whilst these events were on. Weddings: In ancient Greece marriages were arranged by parents and professional matchmakers were not encouraged. The Ancient Greek wedding customs generally stimulated the responsibility in personal relationships. The woman, who is getting married, father would give his permission to a suitable male who would be able to afford the marriage. This made the marriage legal. |

worshipping
When the Ancient Greeks wanted to worship Zeus or the other heavenly gods they would stand, with their hands to the sky. They would kneel down to the earth whilst powerfully using their hands to hit the earth. This is what they would do to worship Hades.
Whenever the ancient Greeks prayed they would ask for help and support. They would also offer goods like wine, oil, milk, sweets and nuts. As well as this they would sacrifice the bones and fat of their animals like rams, ewes, cows, bulls and goats. This was done based on what they believed the god they had chosen to worship would like. If somebody did not praise the gods punishments would be made. For example there was a woman called Meropis who was turned into an owl by Athena. The dead would also receive these offers and sacrifices because the people believed that the dead enjoyed the offers from their relatives. |
